Go Home Dirty: Attending a World of Outlaws Race

World of Outlaws at Rockford Speedway

Going to a World of Outlaws Late Model Series race, where every night is a shootout, can only be described as epic. On June 30, 2016, a few members from the Craftsman team had the privilege attending the World of Outlaws race at Rockford Speedway in Illinois. From their recollection, there’s nothing else like it. The energy in the bleachers, the roars from the pit, the smells from the concessions and the bonds amongst fans were palpable. Everyone arrives clean, but leaves a little dirtier—as they should. Here’s a stab at describing what it’s like to be a World of Outlaws event.

First and foremost, you can get up close and personal with the drivers. Before any of the cars hit the dirt, fans get a sneak peek at all the cars and even get to see what’s under the hoods. It’s not uncommon to be two feet from a driver while he and his team prep the engine before hot laps.

Secondly, the drivers meeting is the easiest way to get up to speed on how the races operate. Each and every driver meets in a public area to hear the event organizer run through the rules (yes, even Outlaws have rules to follow … or bend). Similar to the previous perk, this is another great way to mingle with the drivers.

Thirdly, eat the food! It’s out of this world. There’s everything from old-fashioned kettle cooked popcorn, to gooey Philly cheese steaks, to mile-high cotton candy, to deep-fried whatever-you-can-think-ofs. And where there’s food, there will be plenty of drinks to wash it all down (which is definitely the case). Come hungry, you won’t regret it.

Lastly, but certainly not least, be prepared to get a little dirty. We alluded to this earlier, but with cars sprinting around the track and drifting around corners, dirt clouds easily consume the rows of screaming fans. That means dirt on your clothes, dirt in your hair, and dirt in your beers (if you don’t use the ol’ hand-cover method). But getting dirty isn’t a bad thing; it’s more like a gift from the Outlaws, thanking you for watching them do their thing—it’s something to wear home proudly.
